Where vision becomes reality.
The project at a glance
Built around an opportunity
Friends of Sick Association had an established presence in Durban, and an existing building that no longer matched where the organisation was headed. The brief wasn't simply for a replacement — it called for a single hall able to carry FOSA's own meetings, gatherings and community events, while also serving as a professional venue that outside organisations and businesses could hire for functions, conferences and meetings.
That meant the building had to work on two levels at once: practical and welcoming enough for everyday community use, and durable and flexible enough to meet what paying external hirers would expect from a venue.
A hall built for more than today.
A facility designed to serve FOSA's own activities while opening its doors — and its revenue potential — to the wider community.
Every decision, from layout to finishes, was weighed against how the space would actually be used — FOSA's own events on one day, a paying external hire the next.
From vision to reality
FOSA needed more than a new building — a flexible community and events asset built for the long term. The existing building no longer met the organisation's evolving needs.
The work, in full
From demolition through to the final coat of paint, the approved 7‑month programme covered every trade needed to deliver a complete, ready‑to‑use facility.
A space built for community.
A facility built for the future.
Rather than a building used only occasionally for FOSA's own activities, the hall was designed to work harder. By opening the space to organisations, businesses and community groups for hire, the project gives FOSA a more sustainable model — a facility that supports its community mandate while helping fund its ongoing operations and future initiatives.
A dedicated venue for FOSA's own meetings, gatherings, cultural and social events.
A professional space available for hire — conferences, functions, meetings and private events.
What we built
A modern, multi-purpose venue for meetings, functions, conferences and community life — designed and built with equal care for FOSA's own use and for the standards expected by external hirers.
Development and construction, under one group
VAD Group brings property development and construction capability together, so a project like FOSA's hall moves from brief to built reality without the gaps that come from managing separate contractors.
For FOSA, that meant one team accountable for translating a community brief into a functional, practical built environment — weighing every decision against the diverse ways the hall would ultimately be used, by FOSA and by hire.
